Prasar Bharati to MIB: No plans to stop commissioning of programmes

NEW DELHI: Prasar Bharati has assured the Information and Broadcasting Ministry (I&B) that there are no plans to stop commissioning of programmes by Doordarshan.
 
However, a Doordarshan source told Indiantelevision.com that the commission has taken on a new form. It is now a Self Financed Commissioning in the sense that the producer makes the series at his or her own cost initially after getting it cleared from DD and then later gets the costs reimbursed.
 
DD has decided to procure content through various notified schemes such as Self Finance Commissioning (SFC), Revenue Sharing Mode (RSM) for producers/simulcast, and Advertisement Funded Programme (AFP). The Revenue Sharing Scheme (Producers/Simulcast) also allows Doordarshan to collaborate with some private channels for sourcing some high quality software in the simulcast mode content on favourable terms.

Jan. 26, 2015 wasn't just another Republic Day for Prasar Bharati, the government-owned body that runs Doordarshan, India's public broadcaster.

It was the first after Narendra Modi—a politician with a penchant for picture-perfect, grandiose events—took office last year, with the Indian prime minister also hosting US president Barack Obama.

Not only had no US president before Obama attended the parade in New Delhi, perhaps never before had the country—and the world—put India's celebration of democracy under such scrutiny.

Jan. 26, 2015 wasn't just another Republic Day for Prasar Bharati, the government-owned body that runs Doordarshan, India's public broadcaster.
It was the first after Narendra Modi—a politician with a penchant for picture-perfect, grandiose events—took office last year, with the Indian prime minister also hosting US president Barack Obama.
Not only had no US president before Obama attended the parade in New Delhi, perhaps never before had the country—and the world—put India's celebration of democracy under such scrutiny.

As the only broadcaster responsible for transmitting the images, Prasar Bharati had to pull it off. With 107 minutes of live coverage—with thousands of soldiers, artists, schoolchildren and even a few motorcycle daredevils making their way down Rajpath—the broadcaster had to also seamlessly ensure bilingual commentary and sign language interpretation without any glitch.
It didn't help that the last time one of the world's most important heads of state, China's Xi Jinping, came to India, the broadcaster had messed up. A news reader at Prasar Bharati's television arm Doordarshan read out the Chinese president's name as "Eleven Jinping."
Much ridicule followed.
"We wanted to get rid of the Xi Jinping episode and be appreciated for our real worth," Jawahar Sircar, Prasar Bharati's CEO, told Quartz.
But it wasn't easy.

Today, Shri Barack Obama, President of the United States, joins us in a special programme of Mann Ki Baat. For the last few months, I have been sharing my "Mann Ki Baat" with you. But today, people from various parts of the country have asked questions. 

But most of the questions are connected to politics, foreign policy, economic policy. However, some questions touch the heart. And I believe if we touch those questions today, we shall be able to reach out to the common man in different parts of the country. And therefore, the questions asked in press conferences, or discussed in meetings – instead of those – if we discuss what comes from the heart, and repeat it, hum it, we get a new energy. And therefore, in my opinion, those questions are more important. Some people wonder, what does "Barack" mean? I was searching for the meaning of Barack. In Swahili language, which is spoken in parts of Africa, Barack means, one who is blessed. I believe, along with a name, his family gave him a big gift. 

African countries have lived by the ancient idea of 'Ubuntu', which alludes to the 'oneness in humanity'. They say – "I am, because we are". Despite the gap in centuries and borders, there is the same spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which speak of in India. This is the great shared heritage of humanity. This unites us. When we discuss Mahatma Gandhi, we remember Henry Thoreau, from whom Mahatma Gandhi learnt disobedience. When we talk about Martin Luther King or Obama, we hear from their lips, respect for Mahatma Gandhi. These are the things that unite the world.

DD coverage goes hi-tech

Improved images and special sign language commentary for the hearing-impaired — the national broadcaster Doordarshan's live coverage of the Republic Day parade was impressive this year.

Senior DD officials said apart from providing sign language interpretation on DD News and DD Bharati, the national broadcaster also set up 24 high-definition cameras and deputed nearly 100 skilled professionals for the coverage of the event. The Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had earlier asked private channels to carry the live telecast of the parade with commentary, along with the signals of DD News with sign language interpretation.

President Obama and PM Modi to Share Airwaves in 'Mann Ki Baat' Special Edition Tomorrow

The joint radio address of Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'Mann ki Baat' and US President Barack Obama will be aired at 8pm tomorrow and is likely to be of a little more than half-an-hour duration. Modi tweeted today along with a photograph showing him with Obama with a caption: "Sharing our 'Mann Ki Baat' during the recording of the radio programme. Tune in on 27th January at 8 PM IST for the special episode! #MannKiBaat #Radio #USA #India."



Sources said the recording of the programme was done this afternoon at Hyderabad House and it is going to be nearly 35 minute-long, which is longer than Modi's previous 'Man Ki Baat editions. The Prime Minister, who in this episode conducts the show himself, will be heard speaking in the programme in both Hindi and English and has chosen questions related to the topic Indo-US relations, sources said. This is the first time that 'Mann ki Baat' will have a guest appearing along with Modi, sharing the airwaves.

Doordarshan relaunches website to increase accessibility

Doordarshan's website, www.ddindia.gov.in, was relaunched with a whole new look on January 14, 2015. The new website is fresh, vibrant, contemporary and colourful. The emphasis is as much on aesthetic appeal as it is on content and administration related details. The new website also offers ease of navigation as it has dedicated pages of each national channel, including one for DD Kisan which is yet to be launched.

Touted to be the corporate website, Doordarshan's newly launched website further links the user to all regional channels' existing websites. The topics on the home page range from specific details on DD Free Dish to news headlines, scheduled movies of the week and easy social media accessibility. Also, via website, users would be able to access live streaming of DD News.

To infuse vibrancy, the website also offers a clickable option for users to view the website in four different colour themes. The users can also change the sizes of the fonts for ease of legibility. There is an added new feature – the dynamically updated programme schedule of national channels with regular update being done remotely by What's On India. This channel guide allows users to view the programmes being telecast for that particular time band on each channel, as well as the programmes lined up for the entire day.

MUMBAI: Indian pubcaster Doordarshan is planning an expansive coverage of the 35th National Games through its main sports and numerous regional channels. This will include live telecasts, highlights and news based programs of the Games.
 
Doordarshan will start telecasting special programs on Games from 31 January to 14 February, 2015. This includes the opening and closing ceremonies of the National Games.

Indian security establishment has not yet given up hope to persuade its US counterparts to let the US President Barack Obama arrive as the chief guest for Republic Day parade accompanying President Pranab Mukherjee in his limousine.

Highly placed sources said that while all the other security issues have been sorted out, President Obama's arrival to Rajpath and departure still remains open and the security staff accompanying POTUS may relent and agree to their request.

"It is still being debated and we hope that instead of traveling in his separate limousine called the Beast, president Obama will arrive and depart in our President's car. We have met and answered all the concerns of the US security staff accompanying president Obama," sources said.

Success stories related to 'Swachh Bharat' campaign and its positive outcomes will soon be beamed to viewers and listeners of Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR).

Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Monday said that it is important that success stories of the ongoing campaign is telecast on public broadcasters.

"We are picking up success stories on how a single person in a small village has been able to change things and those success models will create an example for others to follow," he said.

DD Urdu: Over 160 series commissioned; several new series launched this month

NEW DELHI: A total of around 400-odd serials have been selected for Doordarshan's Urdu service out of a total of 580 that were pending before the Prasar Bharati Board.
 
According to DD additional director general Anita Sinha, 165 series out of these have been commissioned.
 
Thus, after DD National, DD Bharati and DD News, a major revamp of DD Urdu has been undertaken with several new shows being introduced from the beginning of this month. These are new niche shows that cater to their selective audience.

Indicating that government was not inclined to interfere either in the content or the business of media entities, Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley on Sunday said that the government was not in favour of a cap on advertising for TV or print media. Delivering the first JS Verma Memorial Lecture Jaitley spoke out against the 12-minute-an-hour cap on advertising stipulated for TV news channels by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). 

He wondered how such a cap fit with Article 19 1 A of the constitution that guarantees freedom of the press. "It will be music to the years of media persons. My ministry a couple of years ago came out with a statutory law that no channel will telecast advertisements beyond so many minutes. i have been struggling, in my own mind, since then as to how this meets the challenge of Article 19 1 (a)," jaitley said. He added, "Is the government supposed to tell newspapers and channels as to how much advertisement and how much news. If the viewers or readers find it monotonous, they have the power to switch on to something else. Government getting into the business of how much news and how much ads is a bad precedent to lay down." Media houses have been strongly opposed to this regulation as usurious carriage fees and falling advertisement rates have stifled TV news channel economy and broadcasters have been struggling to break even.

I&B ministry earmarks Rs 20 crore to strengthen TV channels' monitoring

NEW DELHI: An amount of Rs 20 crore has been allocated in the current financial year 2014-15 for facilitating augmentation of the monitoring capacity of the Electronic Media Monitoring Centre (EMMC).
 
Information and Broadcasting Ministry (I&B Ministry) sources told Indiantelevision.com that a sum of Rs 90 crore had been earmarked in the 12th Plan 2012 to 2017 to enhance the monitoring capacity of the centre.
 
EMMC is a subordinate office under the Ministry of I&B and has been set up with state-of-the-art facility with effect from 9 June, 2008. EMMC monitors the content of the private satellite TV channels with regard to violation of Programme and Advertising Codes as enshrined in the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 and Cable Television Network Rules, 1994.

All India Radio Port Blair has introduced a new programme from 1st Janaury 2015 onwards named "SMS MY CHOICE". This programme is broadcast every Tuesday and Thursday from 1100hrs to 1200hrs.  Listeners can SMS the song of their choice with the first line along with the name and address of the listener to cell number 9434285115 to listen to the songs of their choice through this programme. SMS can be sent on the day of broadcast from 0800hrs to 1000hrs.

DD Urdu has launched 'Jashn-e-Begum Akhtar', a talent hunt to commemorate the centenary year of renowned singer Begum Akhtar 

New Delhi: With its newly-launched singing reality show 'Jashn-e-Begum Akhtar', state-owned channel DD Urdu is aiming to revive ghazal singing among youth. 'Jashn-e-Begum Akhtar', a talent hunt to commemorate the centenary year of renowned singer Begum Akhtar, will see its five finalists who will perform in front of singers Kavita Krishnamurthy, Hari Haran, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain besides lyricists Gulzar and Javed Akhtar in March. Wasim Barelvi, who is one of the jury members of the show, said the reality contest is first of its kind in India and aims to revive ghazal singing. "Ghazal has the power to connect hearts and in today's time such kind of art form is a necessity. We should not forget it. I am happy that DD is working towards reviving the art form and these young participants are equally excited about it," Barelvi told the media. The regional rounds of the competition were held at five regional centres of the channel—Kolkata, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Delhi and Mumbai. Participants in the age group of 18 to 40 years are eligible to participate in the reality show.

NEW DELHI: Even as it depends on Doordarshan archives for its programming, DD Bharati has planned several live reportage during this month, apart from the telecast of the Republic Day Parade.
 
There is a subtle relationship between ancient places of worship and classical dances. The gracefully dipping and rising contours of these temples does reveal that it is the same lyricality, which one perceives in the movements of Indian dances. The temple architecture of ancient India as well as classical dances were born of the same aesthetic sensibilities. That is the probable reason for important dance festivals to be held against the ideal backdrop of ancient temples.
 
DD Bharati will cover live the three-day Mukteswar Odissi dance festival that gets underway at the Mukteswar temple premises in Bhubaneswar from 14 to 16 January featuring solo dances by Sujata Mohapatra, Sangeeta Dash and Naba Kishore Mishra; duets by Lingaraj Pradhan-Sanjukta Dutta, Rashmi Raj-Biswabhusan Mohapatra and Debasish Patnaik-Niladri Bhusan Mohanty besides group presentations by the Vitalina Lobach and troupe from Russia, Poushali Mukerjee's troupe from Kolkata and Odisha Dance Academy, Bhubaneswar.

NEW DELHI: Even as preparations are in full swing for the Republic Day parade, DD Bharati has commenced telecast of 'Gantantra Diwas Samaroh Ki Gaurav Yatra' at 4 pm every day, which comprises the archival footage of the parade till 2013.
 
In association with Vigyan Prasar, DD Bharati has commenced daily telecast of 'Vigyan Ke Pathik' from 9 January at 5 pm, repeated next day at 1 am and 9 am. Each episode is devoted to one great scientist work and his or her contribution. Some of the scientists include JC Bose, KS Krishan, PC Ray, Charles Darwin and S Chandrasekhar.

During a press conference held at Guwahati, the minister said that, Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in action so he emphasized on Act East policy.
 
"AIR has high reach in North East. Information and broadcasting ministry will encourage in setting up community radios in border areas," Rathore said.  
 
Rathore said that the thrust has been given in North East region and his ministry will provide supports in setting community radios in the region.

DD to launch 3 new N-E specific channels: Rathore

Guwahati: "The entire Door Darshan (DD) network is being digitised and all the channels will be satellite channels. Three new satellite channels – Asomi, Mamina and Arunprabha — dedicated to the Northeast will be launched soon to promote local language and culture of the region before the national global audience," Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Rajyavar-dhan Singh Rathore said on Monday here.

Rathore who was here to grace the valedictory function of the 19th National Youth Festival also
informed that , " There is plan to expand the All India Radio (AIR) network and set up community radio
stations especially in border areas of the country for the benefit of educational institutions and other important social institution. Northeast will be one of the top priorities in the scheme." He also said construction work for permanent building of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication will begin
soon in Aizawl in Mizoram.

9th January 2015, All India Radio & Doordarshan are the biggest service broadcaster in the world and have to work hard to make it the world's best broadcaster in the world, said Prasar Bharati chairman Dr.A.Suryaprakash. He was delivering the key note address at the Inaugural function of South Zone convention of Programme Staff Association of All India Radio & Doordarshan held at Hotel Chancery Pavilion Seminor hall, Bangalore.

He said Prasar Bharati is conferred autonomy by law with innovation, dynamism and flexibility to enhance the Democratic traditions. There is a need to inculcate professionalism in the changing media atmosphere and maintain the independence of the institution. TRPs are damaging the all media and its credibility also. He assured the Programme staff, that he on priority is trying to solve the service problems and also recruit new blood into the organization.

Shri Jawahar Sarkar, CEO. Prasar Bharati said in his inaugural address that All India Radio will soon expand its operations with more FM broadcasts along with DRM broadcasts. Younger generation will now listen FM radio only with latest information and entertainment. All FM radio stations will be available on mobile phones and it will be listened by younger generation. He gave a call to all programme staff to come up with new ideas and extend the operation through IT and social media by repackaging content to the requirements of the listeners and save this cultural organization in this crazy and sensationalizing media atmosphere.

  New Delhi, Jan 11 (PTI) In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on disseminating information through new media, Information and Broadcasting Ministry is planning to use 'WhatsApp' and also integrate other social media platforms to hold 'talkathons'.

  While the ministry has been widely using Twitter, Facebook and Youtube to publicise important events, it has yet not utilised the potential of WhatsApp, a senior official said.

Importance being given to improve quality of programmes, he says

Arkalgud Suryaprakash, chairman of the Prasar Bharati, said on Tuesday that the public broadcaster was on the road to autonomy. In fact, the very purpose of passing the Prasar Bharti Bill in 1990 was to make it an independent entity.

Participating in an interactive session with presspersons here, Dr. Suryaprakash said he was giving importance to bring in professionalism and improve the quality of programmes. "A day will come when our news channels will not hesitate to criticise government programmes. We require some more time to do it," he said in response to a question on the national news channels keeping silent on issues such as misuse of funds meant for the implementation of various government schemes.

All India Radio to fight cross-border propaganda

The Indian government has decided to ramp up national broadcasters All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan television in border areas to counter propaganda from neighbouring countries, reports The Asian Age.

The areas chosen for strengthening of coverage include those along the country's border with Pakistan, China, Nepal and Bangladesh.

स्पीड से चलेगी दूरदर्शन की धीमी गाड़ी!

नई दिल्ली. बुनियाद, हम लोग और नुक्कड़ जैसे शोज होस्ट करने वाले दूरदर्शन ने अपनी रेटिंग निजी चैनलों के टीवी नाटकों के कारण खो दी थी, लेकिन नरेंद्र मोदी सरकार फिर से इस राष्ट्रीय नेटवर्क पर क्वॉलिटी सीरियलों को लाने की योजना बना रही है।

इसकी प्रक्रिया अरुण जेटली की अध्यक्षता में हाल में हुई मीटिंग के साथ शुरू हो गई है। वित्त मंत्रालय का नेतृत्व करने वाले जेटली सूचना और प्रसारण मंत्रालय का पोर्टफोलियो भी हैंडल करते है। उनकी अध्यक्षता में हुई बैठक में सूचना व प्रसारण जूनियर मंत्री राघवेंद्र राठौड़, वरिष्ठ दूरदर्शन के अधिकारी और टीवी प्रोडक्शन हाउसेस के वरिष्ठ प्रतिनिधि मौजूद थे।
