Prasar Bharati: A ‘successful’ year gone by

By Brigadier (Retd) VAM Hussain Posted on : 30 Dec 2014 07:09 pm

Since 1995, Doordarshan has been trying to build bridges of communication with Indians living abroad and also to showcase its diverse culture, values and rich heritage to the world by launching its international channel.
From March 2011, Doordarshan started availing of the service of ISRO's INSAT-4B in both KU band and C band. However, the inadequacy of not being able to locate any significant global partners to distribute and connect DD to homes overseas continued. Doordarshan did make renewed efforts through Indian Missions to distribute its international channel abroad, but it could make little progress in this last mile distribution, because of several reasons. On the other hand, countries like Japan, Germany, China, Russia and France, invested heavily to ensure a global reach for their international channels.
Over the last one year, concerted efforts made by Prasar Bharati to locate viable global distribution platform to DD India has resulted in an agreement with Deutsche Welle (DW), the international broadcasting arm of the German public broadcaster for a slot on the DTH platform of EUTEL SAT Hotbird 13 B. It is an extremely popular DTH platform and in Europe it was the logical choice for DD India to launch its overseas services afresh. Hotbird 13B has a total number of 1543 TV channels of which 1117 TV channels are free-to-air. A total of 124 English channels are available on this satellite, prominent amongst which are BBC, CNN, CCTV, RT, France24, VOA TV, Euromans, Sky News, Bloomberg TV, Al Jazeera, etc.  DD India will be in the basic package of the DTH service. The projection of India's viewpoint to the global audience being  a dire necessity, Prasar Bharati has found a suitable platform with DW on extremely favourable terms on reciprocal basis which is no mean achievement.Placing DD on Hotbird DTH platform will also give it full access to the Middle Eastern GCC countries, where Indians work and reside in large numbers. The telecast trials are likely in a few days and formal launching is expected shortly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat has been a hit on the airwaves three months in a row, with audiences tuning in to hear the PM on Sunday mornings. But the show's success, it turns out, is partly driven by the mighty hand of officialdom.

Reel tribute to teen envoys of social change - Doordarshan to air films on Unicef schoolgirls who fought child marriage, found freedom of speech

freedom of speech

When 15-year-old Geeta Tantubai of Jamshedpur opposed her marriage last year and made headlines for her grit, she perhaps barely imagined that her story would one day be aired on national television to inspire others.
The life of the Ghorabandha high school ninth grader and that of her partner in crusade for freedom of expression - Arti Sharma, also 15 and a student of Laxminagar middle school - will be featured on Doordarshan next month as a part of Unicef and Prasar Bharati's collaboration to celebrate 25 years of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The tales of the two girls from the steel city are among 35 "stories of change" spurred by programmes run by Unicef, which also organised an orientation programme on child rights at Karim City College on Wednesday. A day before, it had hosted an annual meet of cub scribes at Jamshedpur Women's College.

Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar blames the past for Doordarshan’s sickness

Posted on: 04/12/2014 12:27 AM   Chandni Mathur

MUMBAI: While the new government is out to restore Prasar Bharati to its olden glory, the public is slamming the pubcaster for the series of gaffes that have put it in the news recently. However, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar says that the problems started a long time ago and it is the sour fruits that are being borne now. The heydays of Prasar Bharati came to their illogical end during the 1990s with the advent of satellite television. It's been on a downward swing ever since. "The problems have not started today; what you are getting now is just the sour fruit of an old tree. It took root when satellite TV was beginning a new era and Doordarshan was spending left, right and centre on terrestrial," Sircar tells TelevisionPost.com. Sircar says that the government should have woken up to the problem long time back. "Now suddenly everyone is taking note of it because there is too much cacophony happening on many news channels."

Doordarshan Kendra in VIjayawada gets its bearings right

DC CORRESPONDENT | December 02, 2014, 09.12 am IST

Vijayawada: Fortunes of Doordarshan Kendra, Vijayawada, which had been languishing in a state of neglect for decades for want of better infrastructure and staff, appear to be on the upswing.
Though this studio was set up on the demand of the people of the region, not much was done for its betterment. As a result, it left the locals, who hoped for better coverage of news, events and culture, deeply disappointed.

For decades, the Vijayawada DD studio continued to function as a transmitter of programmes produced by Hyderabad and Delhi DD studios. To retain the "studio" tag, it used to produce programmes of just half-an-hour duration per day.

Doordarshan officials blame gaffes on ‘adhocism’

By Vasudha Venugopal, ET Bureau | 1 Dec, 2014, 04.00AM IST

NEW DELHI: With a video of a Doordarshan anchor making several gaffes at the Goa film festival going viral on social media, barely two months after another anchor used a roman numeral to address the Chinese President Xi Jinping, the public broadcaster seems to be making news for all the wrong reasons.

But even as media watchers point out that DD anchors have made at least four major mistakes on air in the past five months, officials blame the lapses on the growing dependence on "casual reporters" for reading news and anchoring programmes since vacancies have not been filled in the organisation for the past two decades.

DD news set to lose its bilingual status soon

DC | Nitin Mahajan | December 01, 2014, 06.12 am IST

New Delhi: Doordarshan News, the dedicated news channel of the national broadcaster, is set to lose its bilingual status. Highly-placed sources stated that DD News will soon be relaunched in Hindi and subsequently a new dedicated news channel in English will also be launched. Currently, the channel broadcasts news in Hindi and English.

Sources stated that due to its bilingual status the channel has been unable to evolve a dedicated viewership. "How can dedicated viewership be evolved if the channel switches from airing Hindi to English at prime time. It is unheard of across the globe," sources said. Interestingly, at the 8-9 pm slot Hindi news is aired while at 9-10 pm slot news in English is aired.
