All India Radio sacks 100 RJs aged above 35

TNN | Aug 9, 2014, 02.11 AM IST

KOLKATA: You won't hear some of your favourite voices on FM Rainbow and FM Gold any more. That's because All India Radio (AIR) has terminated the services of around 100 casual RJs above the age of 35 years at its Kolkata station. They will cease work after Friday midnight.

"It is absolutely irrational to terminate our services just because we have crossed 35. There is no scientific reasoning that says that once a person crosses 35, the voice modulation ceases to sound good. Moreover, most of us feed our families from our income. About 85% of us are women," said Avantika Ghosh, honorary general secretary, AIR Broadcasters' Welfare Association, Kolkata (AIRBWAK).
