LOL: Doordarshan to Sue Delhi Daredevils for Defaming Initials

Source: TheIndianRepublic.com
Tuesday, 22 April 2014 17:46

Doordarshan, the TV network stuck in the 1990s, is not the most powerful, or the most popular brand in India. Most people would feel that DD stands for every brand that is old, boring and out of date. Its approval rating will probably not be very high, no matter who you ask.

But even this brand has realized that it could fall lower. We have heard that Doordarshan may be suing the Delhi Daredevils (also known as DD) for defaming the initials they both share.

We asked a top executive at Doordarshan why this was happening, and he shed some light on the case. He acknowledged that Doordarshan had been lagging behind every one of its competitors for decades, that it lacked on at least 7 fronts: programming,............

Lucknow:  Films of stars Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Nagma, Smriti Irani and Jaaved Jaaferi, who are all contesting Lok Sabha election, have been banned from being telecast on the national television channel Doordarshan, officials said Thursday.

After programmes and films were brought under the ambit of the model code of conduct, official said these will now be viewed as objects that influence voters.

Polling in parliamentary constituencies from where Raj Babbar (Congress), Nagma (Congress) and Jaya Prada (Rashtriya Lok Dal) are contesting have been completed, while polling is yet to take place in constituencies of Hema Malini (BJP), Jaaved Jaaferi (AAP) and Smriti Irani (BJP).

Ads, films of celebrity contestants allowed on private TV channels, in cinema halls

Source: Times of India | Bharti Jain,TNN
Apr 15, 2014

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday allowed private television networks and cinema theatres to air films and commercial advertisements featuring actors who are contesting the election, but barred the state-run Doordarshan from telecasting such feature films.

In a communication sent to Prasar Bharti CEO; Director General, Doordarshan; and state chief electoral officers, the Commission said the telecast of films and commercials featuring actors and celebrities contesting these polls would not be restrained on private TV channels or in cinema halls. "However, telecast of such feature films (other than commercial advertisement) will not be allowed on Doordarshan during the period of the enforcement of model code of conduct, considering that Doordarshan is run on public funds," the EC said while asking action to be taken accordingly.

Among the filmstars in the fray in these polls are Hema Malini, Jaya Prada, Raj Babbar, Nagma, Vinod Khanna and Shatrughan Sinha.

When Doordarshan was the only candidate

Source: Hindustan Times | Sona Sethi, Hindustan Times  Chandigarh
April 11, 2014

As I watch the Indian election fervour escalate from half a world away, I'm reminded of my growing years in India and how we looked forward to the elections every five years. No, it wasn't for any sense of patriotism or for the love of any one candidate.

It was primarily because of Doordarshan. We grew up before cable television made its spectacular entrance into the Indian living room. We belong to the Doordarshan era. The lone channel would telecast the best of movies while the ballots were being counted.

Many of us remember watching "Chupke Chupke", "Baaton Baaton Mein" and, of course, the quintessential Indian election movie, "Aandhi", that was rumoured to be based loosely on the life of the late prime minister Indira Gandhi.

The cable-TV generation probably cannot relate to us, the Doordarshan generation. They are...............

Music to your ears

SUMMARY
This wireless speaker offers high quality audio and is great for carrying to a party

In the eighties, a large number of Gulf returnees used to descend on the Indian soil with three key items in their baggage—a two-in-one, dry fruits and some amount of gold. Among these, a radio and cassette player-cum-recorder was a must-have; people used to listen to news and their choice of music on these portable audio systems. Mind you, we are talking about the pre-satellite television days when Doordarshan and All India Radio were the chief sources of entertainment and the once-in-a-week Chitrahaar and weekend Hindi movies used to be high on the priority list of viewers.

The Harman Kardon Go+Wireless wireless speaker will ship you back to that era; its big stainless steel handle bears a striking resemblance to the two-in-ones of those times. But in terms of performance and technology inside, this innovation from Harman International is vastly superior. It is a high performance, wireless speaker designed to work with a slew of Apple devices— iPad mini, iPad (4th generation), iPhone 5, iPod touch (5th generation) or.................

Story of the good ol' television

Source: The Hindu | Preetha Kadhir
April 8, 2014

Television has invaded our lives so much that hardly a day goes by without it. Preetha Kadhir traces its journey in India..

The elections are starting today and most of us are following the happenings across the length and breath of the country, thanks to minute-to-minute updates on the grand idiot box. It would only be apt to trace the humble beginning of the television at this point.

Television’s introduction in India happened in September 15, 1959 in Delhi. It was an initiative by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which gave the Indian government 20,000 U.S. dollars and 180 Philips TV sets. It is hard to believe that initially programmes were broadcast twice a week for an hour a day. The topics were mostly educational such as community health, citizens’ duties and rights, traffic, road senses etc.

Two years later, a school educational project was included. So far, the operations were...................

Broadcasting woes

“If we are to transform India, a realist or ‘Patelist’ engagement with the rest of the world is what we must implement; engaging the world from strength while recognising reality for what it is, foreswearing hubris and belligerence”, remarked Shiv Shankar Menon during the Patel Memorial Lecture of All India Radio last year. India in effect continues with Sardar Patel appreciation against taking the Kashmir issue to the United Nations and has been successful in averting international manipulation in our internal affairs.  In the recent past, reports appeared in sections of the press that our neighbours are active in rolling controversies and possible resentment for rehabilitating surrendered militants via Nepal. Yasin Bhatkal's revelation of Nepal remaining the favoured nation for transiting members of the Indian Mujahideen further fuelled diplomatic irritation.

The most disturbing vilification campaign alleging torture of Nepalese people whipping up local sentiments and a number of FM stations with content paid up by vested interests and mixing attractive Bollywood stuff in Nepal are psy weapons that merit the nation's intervention. Gorkhas of Nepalese origin have shared triumphs and sorrows battling in all theatres of operations as part of the glorious Indian Army. As of today, there seems to be no coordinated trans-border broadcast policy to air either views or the stand point of the nation. India’s National Public Broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, continues to be sub-optimally utilised.

After Independence and up to the eighties, the External Services Division of AIR functioned in close coordination with MEA through...............

India proposes global convention on no-first use of nuclear weapons

Source: Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) | World News

NEW DELHI, April 02 (KUNA) -- In a bid to rid the world of nuclear weapons, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday proposed a global convention on no-first use of nuclear weapons, state run All India Radio (AIR) reported.

While addressing a seminar on a "Nuclear Free World: From Conception to Reality" here in New Delhi, AIR quoted the prime minister as saying that that if all states possessing nuclear weapons recognise and are prepared to declare it, "move to the establishment of global no-first use norm can be quick".
