NEW DELHI, SEPT 27:

Viewers of Doordarshan, which has struggled to get top quality programmes, can now look forward to mega budget productions as the public broadcaster has decided to share revenue with producers if they provide superior content.

As part the new strategy, Doordarshan has decided to air big-budget programmes for which producers can also bring advertisers or enter into arrangement with private channels for jointly telecasting cost intensive productions.

Prasar Bharati Board has recently approved proposals which allow Doordarshan to go for Advertiser Funded Programmes (AFPs) and other models of content sourcing like revenue sharing with producers along with simulcasting with private channels, senior officials said.

Under the revenue sharing mode, the producer will offer the programme to Doordarshan for telecast free of cost.

The channel expects total revenue of about Rs 50 lakh.

The Marathi general entertainment channel, Doordarshan Sahyadri, will telecast a special event titled 'Aey Malik Tere Bande Hum', in association with Yerwada Prison Authorities. The inmates of the jail (which is also considered to be a correction home for the prisoners) will perform on September, 26 at Bal Gandharva Auditorium, Pune.

Timiratun Tejakade will be written, choreographed and produced by the inmates as a part of their effort to showcase correctional measures. Sanjay Dutt, a popular film star who is serving his sentence in prison, will be an important part of the event.

It is worth noting that the prison authorities will face a huge risk in bringing 50 of the prisoners out of the jail on the day. The event will be telecast in Marathi on October, 2 on DD-Sahyadri at 3 pm, while a repeat will be telecast on DD1 in Hindi on October, 12 at 12 noon.

Doordarshan to switch to DVB-T2 technology

Source: NEXTVASIA | By Aishwariya S in Free to Air DTT
Posted on September 26, 2013

As public broadcaster, Doordarshan continues to revamp itself, it has announced that in order to support more than 600 free-to-air TV channels, it will be switching to DVB-T2 technology. With transmitters being set up across the country, the broadcaster hopes to start the services as early as March 2014.

Currently only Doordarshan has the rights to broadcast channels through transmitters and with the DVB-T2 technology, it has been converting existing transmitters into digital transmitters capable to airing hundreds of channels. However this might prove a problem with viewers with dated television sets that do not come with technology imbedded inside them as that would mean they would have to buy STBs that would pick up these broadcasts. However as the country is in the midst of digitisation which it hopes to complete by 2014, this might not be too much of a problem.

Currently 59 channels coming under DD´s bouquet of which 30 are private channels, 21 DD channels and two channels that telecast parliament sessions. Doordarshan, which functions under broadcaster, Prasar Bharti, will receive a chunk of USD 500 million to upgrade its content and technology. This money will be spent between television and radio programming.

दूरदर्शन की नई तकनीक से मुफ्त दिखेंगे 600 चैनल

Source: livehindustan.com | By Vivek Tiwari, New Delhi
First Published:24-09-13 10:57 PM

AIR, DD to counter anti-India sentiment on Nepal border

Source: The Indian Express | Rahul Tri , Abantika Ghosh: New Delhi
Wed Sep 25 2013, 00:43 hrs

The government has asked All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD) to develop special content and strengthen coverage on the Indo-Nepal border to counter attempts to whip up tension in the region. This comes after the controversial arrest of alleged Kashmiri militant Liyaquat Ali Shah and reports on how he crossed into India via the Nepal border.

Ever since the controversy erupted, there is resentment in the area over the Indian security establishment using the Nepal route to get surrendered militants, who are to be rehabilitated, into the country. Nepalese residents on the border feel their security is being jeopardised over an issue in which their country has no stake.

On the other hand, the arrest of alleged Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and......................

NEW DELHI: Information and broadcasting(I&B) ministry's plan to expand its reach in the Hindi heartland with four 24x7 news channels has hit an unlikely roadblock in 'internal differences' in the ministry itself. Barely a month after the soft launch of the revamped Doordarshan channels in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the ministry has raised objections saying that Prasar Bharati (PB) Board's approval had not been taken.

But, PB chairperson Mrinal Pande told TOI that the Board's in-principle approval had been taken.

Insiders say that the project has not been formally launched because of the growing friction between I&B minister Manish Tewari and Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar. When asked for their view both Tewari and Sircar have denied differences.

Tewari had in July announced that DD.................................

Musically sound

Source: The Hindu | By SARITA BRARA
September 16, 2013

Over the years, All India Radio has played a crucial role in promoting classical music in the country

"Classical music has never been as popular as film or light music. It had committed listenership in the past and the same can be said about the present. To say that listenership of classical music has been lost in the din of film and pop music in the fast paced life today would not be a correct assumption," says Lakshmi Shankar Bajpai, All India Radio Station Director in Delhi.

In the absence of any survey, it is difficult to say whether the number of listeners of classical music has come down or increased, she says. "One small mistake about the name of a raga or its rendering on any of the AIR programmes, and the phones start ringing to point out the mistake."

Also in the annual music competitions that All India Radio organises,.............................

FM III radio auction by next month: Manish Tewari

Source: Business Standarad | IANS  |  New Delhi
September 13, 2013

Auction for FM III radio is likely to roll out by next month, Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Manish Tewari said Friday.

"The FM radio auctions were cleared by the cabinet in 2011. Subsequent to that, there were certain concerns (and) those were articulated by the industry. Those concerns were referred back to the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India)," he told reporters on the sidelines of the two-day seminar CII Big Picture Summit 2013.

He added that the procedures were also examined by both the Broadcast Engineering Consultancy India Limited, which is a public sector undertaking under the I&B ministry, and consultants from the All India Radio. Subsequently, it went back to the inter-ministerial committee and then to the empowered group of ministers, as well as the cabinet.

"So now that we have gone through that entire drill, the processes and procedures, which can ensure that the auction is transparent," Tewari said.

At present 86 cities are covered by FM radio services.
